the small cabinet is a clean-room unit that has been constructed from custom aluminium profiles, glass sheets, rubber inserts and wooden beehives. the base plate of glass has been cut with a queen restrictor mesh, allowing worker-bees to access the encased structure from two hives hung beneath the cabinet.

over the course of the fair, 40 000 worker bees were released into the case to complete a wax honeycomb structure over the figure of a martyred christ rising out of the chaos, his weight seeming to be upheld by the mass strength of the swarm. the figure within the vitrine is made of a laser sintered framework in which the industrious bees created a honeycomb skin over before filling each cell with the honey they produce. then bees worked to remove the honey from the cells and return it to the beehive, cleaning the figure back to the wax cells they originally created. tomáš made the honeycomb a red-orange color to symbolize the cross.

The topic of skateboarding in war-torn Afghanistan has been a well-documented movement which has once again highlighted the sport’s ability to inspire and innovate. VICE photographer Jonnie Craig spoke with Los Angeles-based photographer Noah Abrams regarding his documentation of the “Skateistan” movement for his online platform HUH... [via]

JC: Cool. How did this Skateistan series come about?
NA: I was sitting in my bed surfing the internet one morning and came across a video about skateboarders in Afghanistan. They were skating an old swimming pool that the Taliban had used to execute people in. It just struck me as one of the most positive things I had seen in a long time, especially out of Afghanistan.

JC: So what happened next?
NA: I started to do some research and came across a group called Skateistan who are doing amazing work for the kids in Afghanistan. After that I got really focused on finding a way to get over there and support them.

JC: I’d imagine it’s particularly difficult to get to Afghanistan.
NA: It’s definitely not easy. From idea to actually traveling there took around eight months. Getting the visas was the tricky part but we had some great support on the Afghan side. After all the organizing we had to fly from the US to Germany, then finally to Kabul. It takes a little over two days to get there and we were on a weird travel high when we arrived.

JC: I never would have expected a group of skateboarders to be so warmly welcomed in Afghanistan.
NA: Not to get preachy, but at the end of the day, people are people. Culturally we may be very different but our goals are pretty much the same — we all want to be happy. No-one wants to suffer. This is why, for me, doing a trip like this is so important in the grander scheme of things. It’s that cross-cultural dialogue that will hopefully help push things in the right direction for us all.

i just had to find out guru, the founder of gang starr, amazing mc and the father of hip-hop/jazz passed away. he had been suffering from cancer for the last months and had to give up the fight yesterday morning. he was a true legend and a real inspiration, it was through him that i found out about classic, good rap music. thank you a lot for that. I just bought Stefan Sagmeister's Things i've learned in my live so far. it's quite optimistic but inspiring as well. good book - get it here.
"In 2000, Austrian born, New York-based graphic designer Sagmeister created this book's eponymous list in his diary, including twenty statements such as: "Trying to Look Good Limits My Life," "Assuming is Stifling" and "Worry Solves Nothing." These "maxims," which Sagmeister admits verge on the "banal" but which are also devoid of cynicism, were transformed into art projects: "Assuming is Stifling" graced the cover of a Japanese annual report; "Everybody Always Thinks They are Right" was represented by six 33-foot white inflatable monkeys, each one displaying a different word. This "design book for non-designers" is itself an experiment in form, comprised of 15 booklets in a box whose cover is a cut out of Sagmeister's face; when inserted, each completes the portrait in a different way. One of the booklets includes essays on Sagmeister's oeuvre, the most interesting by critic Heller, who states: "This is truly the nexus of art and design in the service of expression." This book is bound to be of interest to followers of Sagmeister's work, as well as to the general reader in search of an invigorating approach to graphic design and, one might argue, autobiography."

i just went to the screening of banksy's first documentary "exit through the gift shop" at berlinale film festival tonight. i hadn't expected anything special since the trailer makes it look like a lame street-art version of dirty handz, so i was positively surprised by a really smart film about a really naive guy. well, at least he appears to be so. this man is not banksy himself, since "exit through the gift shop" is not a film about him, but about a guy who wanted to make a film about banksy. this man is called thierry guetta, a frenchman who puts his whole life on tape. while thierry tries to make a documentary about graffiti, he gets obsessed with all of the scene's protagonists and, encouraged by banksy, starts his own carreer as mr. brainwash aka the wackest so-called street artist west of mississippi.
ettgf brings up the whole crazyness of today's art scene in which banksy himself has become a big player, apparently without really wanting it. so he comes to a point where he suggests: "Maybe art is a joke." Maybe he is right.

By the way, Berlinale is not the best place to see that film, too many people getting off their sponsored bmws onto the red carpet trying to look ridiculosly very important.
